Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 through October 15. This presents an opportunity for Access Health CT to highlight the fact that underserved communities in Connecticut have mostly people of color and more specifically, people from Latin American backgrounds, so that we can continue our mission to help everyone get health and dental coverage.

Did you know that Hispanic Americans are the fastest growing population in the United States? According to the Connecticut State Department of Administrative Services, the Hispanic population jumped from 8% in 2010 to 17% in 2023 in the State of Connecticut alone. In fact, there are more residents of Puerto Rican heritage per square mile in Hartford, Connecticut than on the island of Puerto Rico itself.

In recognition of our ever-increasing diversity, Access Health CT (AHCT) is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month between September 15 and October 15. Click here for more information.

As we celebrate our diversity, we must also acknowledge that there is more work to be done, especially when it comes to healthcare. In a study published in 2021, AHCT discovered people of color struggle with access to health and dental coverage. If you don’t have health coverage and can’t see a doctor or dentist when you need to, your health could be at risk.

At AHCT, our mission is to make sure everyone in Connecticut has the health and dental coverage they need, regardless of the communities they belong to or the language(s) they speak. Our Health Equity and Outreach (HEO) team works directly with people in communities across the state, and in several languages, to make sure everyone has the information they need — when and where they need it.

Honor your identity and your rich cultural history by getting and staying healthy. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we encourage you to take action by taking care of yourself. Here’s how to get started:

    • Mark your calendar for Open Enrollment starting November 1 and enroll in health and dental coverage through AHCT
    • Make the most of your health and dental coverage by finding a Primary Care Physician (PCP) and dentist
    • Make an appointment for your annual physical exam so that your PCP can review the health screenings that are appropriate for you
    • Schedule a dental cleaning appointment
